Welcome to the First Pick Academy family! Seeing your child step onto the hardwood for the first time is a proud moment. Whether they are joining our Grow and Go (ages 3-5) program or starting their journey in our development sessions, we want to make sure both you and your little athlete feel ready from day one.
Here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth "tip-off" for your child’s basketball journey.
1. The Right Gear for Success
You don’t need to be an NBA pro on day one, but the right equipment helps prevent injury and builds confidence:
-
Basketball Shoes: Good grip and ankle support are key. For our younger Grow and Go stars, comfortable athletic sneakers are perfect.
-
Water Bottle: Basketball is high-energy! Please send your child with a labeled water bottle to stay hydrated during breaks.
-
Appropriate Size Ball: If you're bringing your own, ensure it’s the right fit (Size 5 for most beginners, or Size 6 for older kids). Not sure? Just ask one of our coaches!
2. Understanding the "5+3 System"
At First Pick, we don't just "play ball." We follow a unique 5+3 System:
-
5 Physical Skills: Shooting, Dribbling, Passing, Footwork, and Defense.
-
3 Neural Skills: Focus, Decision Making, and Resilience.
-
Parent Tip: In the first few weeks, don't worry if they aren't "scoring" yet. We are building the neural foundation first—learning to focus and follow instructions is a huge win!
3. Special Notes for "Grow and Go" (Ages 3-5)
If your child is in our Grow and Go program, remember that this is often their first experience with structured sports.
-
Patience is Key: It’s normal for them to be shy or distracted at first.
-
The Goal: At this age, success is defined by having fun, learning to coordinate their movements, and making new friends.
4. The "Sideline Rule": Be Their #1 Fan
We love passionate parents! However, to help your child develop those "3 Neural Skills" (like Decision Making), we ask parents to:
-
Cheer, Don’t Coach: Shouting instructions can confuse a child who is trying to listen to their coach.
-
Positive Reinforcement: Give plenty of high-fives and claps. Let the coaches handle the technical side while you provide the emotional support.
5. Arrive Early to Settle In
We recommend arriving at our venues (like Box Hill, Clayton, or Manningham) about 10 minutes early. This allows your child to get used to the noise of the gym, meet their coach, and start the session with a calm mind rather than rushing in late.
6. The Post-Game Chat
On the car ride home, instead of asking "Did you score?", try asking:
"What was the funnest thing you did today?" or "Did you try your best?"
Keeping the focus on effort and enjoyment is the best way to keep them coming back!
